Training Visa Subclass 407

Training visa (Subclass 407) allows you to take part in workplace-based occupational training activities to improve your skills for your job, area of tertiary study, field of expertise or in a professional development training program in Australia.​​

Training Types

Occupational training required for registration

Workplace-based training is required to get occupational registration, membership or licensing. The registration, membership or licensing is mandatory to work in that occupation in Australia or your home country.

Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation

Workplace-based structured training programs that: 

  1. is specifically tailored and timed to the training needs of the nominated person 
  2. is in relation to an occupation specified on the list of eligible skilled occupations
  3. involves a nominee who has recent and suitable prior experience. This can include employment experience or study experience that: 

  • is the equivalent of at least 12 months full-time experience in the occupation. 
  • has occurred in the 24 months immediately before the nomination is lodged.

Occupational training for capacity building overseas

Overseas qualification  

Structured workplace-based training in Australia for up to 6 months for students who: 

  • are currently enrolled in a foreign educational institution and must complete a period of practical training, research or observation to get their qualification.
  • The training must be specifically tailored to the training needs of the nominated person.


Government support  

  • Structured workplace-based occupational training which has: the support of a government agency in Australia or the government in the home country of the nominated trainee. 
  • Government agency support in Australia must be at the national or state/territory level. 
  • Government in the nominated person’s home country must be at the national, state/territory or provincial level.


Professional development  

  • Professional development programs of face-to-face teaching in a classroom or similar environment in Australia. It is for overseas employers to send their managerial or professional employees.

  • Become an approved temporary activities sponsor


  • Directly provide occupational training which can be paid or unpaid, but must be at least 20 hours per week


  • Satisfy nomination requirements


  • The training provided must be one of the 3 types of occupational training covered by this visa:

  1. Occupational training required for registration
  2. Occupational training to improve skills in an occupation on the Occupation List For Subclass 407 Visa
  3. Occupational training for capacity building overseas

  • Be nominated by a sponsor (employer) to participate in a program of occupational training


  • Be aged at least 18


  • If applying in Australia: hold a valid visa or your last visa (except bridging visa) expired less than 28 days ago


  • If the purpose of training is improving occupational skills: have at least 1-year full-time (or equivalent part-time) work or study experience in the last 2 years 


  • Convincingly demonstrate you are a genuine temporary entrant (GTE) that will only stay temporarily in Australia and leave upon the completion of training


  • Meet health and character requirements


  • Have functional English


  • Arrange health insurance for time in Australia

Benefits & Pathway to PR

Benefit:

  • Lower cost to the employer: there is only one SAF levy for the Subclass 494 nomination whereas there will be two for permanent residence pathway from Subclass 482 visa through to Subclass 186 visa.

As the holder of this visa, you may:​

​

  • migrate to Australia together with your family
  • apply for permanent residency in as soon as 3 years through Subclass 191 visa if eligible without having to be sponsored again
  • stay in Australia for 5 years
  • potentially bring your extended family members to Australia permanently on parent visa or visa intended for other relatives
  • travel overseas and back to Australia without any limitations for any purposes (e.g. overseas holiday, visiting family and/or attending family matters in home country)
  • access Australia’s public health care scheme (Medicare) which essentially provides free medical consultations, operations and hospitalization for a wide range of medical conditions
  • work in Australia full-time
  • study in Australia without any limitations
  • attend free English language course provided by Australian government
